Do I own the Killer Cover that you have designed?

Yes! You own the Copyright to the Killer Cover we design for you. However, it is important to note that your new Killer Cover may contain modified stock imagery and you can only use this image within your eCover design. If you require the stock image for further promotional material our team are happy to let you know where you can purchase this.

Can I order a Killer Cover if I am in another country?

Absolutely. Thanks to the Internet, geographical location is no longer an obstacle. Our online process lets us work with clients abroad as easily as with those right in our back yard. We have designed Killer Covers for clients in Spain, England, New Zealand, Canada and all over the US.

What if I don’t like the design of my cover art?

Your KillerCover is Guaranteed. If you are unhappy with your new Killer Cover we will try to fix this for you with three free rounds of revisions, if you still not happy you get your money back. And if you don’t want us to try and fix it for you we will give you an immediate refund. No strings. No ifs, ands or buts. And no questions asked. How do you deliver my new Killer Cover?

We will send you a link to collect your eCover graphics from.

Will my Killer Cover be ready to use as soon as I get it?

Yes. You will be able to place your new Killer Cover directly into your web page without any further modification.

What file format will my Killer Cover be delivered in?

Your Killer Cover is supplied as 72 DPI PNG.  This is perfect for display on screen.

What is the price of print work compared to the price of web graphics?

The design process for print is different and more time intensive than the standard process for KillerCovers (which are created at the perfect resolution for screen viewing). The price for print graphics is higher as print work needs to be a lot more exact than web-only work. We need to get colors as close as possible, as well as source larger images for your design. Please look through our print area of the website to see some of our print prices.

What do you mean by “Resolution?”

Resolution is the image quality and this is measured in terms of how many pixels (or dots) make up your image. It is commonly referred to as “dpi” (dots per inch).

It is very important for print that a high resolution image is used. This is 300dpi and will ensure sharp crisp images when printed. Low quality images will be blurry when printed.

All web graphic images are designed to be viewed on a screen or computer monitor. The resolution used for web graphics is 72 dpi. Anything higher has no improved visual effect, and only creates longer download times.

Do you do web layouts of all my package elements?

Yes we can arrange different eCovers or graphics in a web layout for you to showcase a virtual product shot of your offer.

Can you send me the image you used on my graphics?

Due to the contracts we have with the image libraries, we are able to incorporate any image into a design, but we cannot purchase and supply individual images to clients. If you require the image for further marketing or branding activities we can direct you to where you can purchase the image yourself, but we cannot under any circumstances actually give you the image. Of course you can use your eCover graphic as you wish as you own the copyright for this.

Can you supply me with the fonts?

We cannot provide you with the fonts for copyright reasons; however, we can tell you the fonts to use and where to purchase them.

Can I print the first page of my PDF ebook?

Yes you can however please note your cover will appear fuzzy and pixelated. Your KillerCover is designed at 72 dpi, not print resolution, which is perfect for web viewing and fast download times. A high resolution file for the first page of the PDF for print purposes would make the file size of your PDF too large for your clients to download. If you require a Print Cover for a physical product let us know.

Can you explain the use of color in web graphic work?

The advantage of color on the web is that it’s cheap.  Technically, you can produce millions of colors on the screen, provided your monitor and video display are a decent quality.  The disadvantage is that there are actually only 216 web-safe colors – meaning that these are the only colors that appear the same on all monitors and operating systems without dithering, be they PC’s or Macs.

Print Covers

Can we create print graphics for you?

Absolutely! If we have already designed graphics for you for web, we make sure we can source the same images at print resolution, which is 300dpi (dots per inch). We then match the print design to the web version. There is a cost to do this so please specify what you require converted to print and we will price it for you.

If you are ordering new print graphics from scratch, just make sure you let us know it is for print so we can give you an accurate quote. Also, please specify all the elements you require, e.g. front cover, back cover, spine etc.

Do I get to see a proof of my design before it is finalized?

You will be able to see a screen image of your final design that you will need to approve before we create the print version.
If you want a printed proof you will need to arrange this with your printer.  You will receive a zip file of your proof from us that you can send to your printer to print out.  They can then print a copy at full size for you to view.  Please note that if you require major changes from the printer proof an additional fee may apply.

I don’t know if I need the print graphics just yet – but I might later. What should I do?

That’s fine. However, you need to let us know this as we will need to make sure all the images used in your work can be sourced at 300 dpi at a later date.
If you have supplied us with images to use, please be aware that if you want a print version made later you will need to supply us with the 300 dpi image.  This is the high resolution image to be used for the print version of your cover

What are all the files that you send me for?

When we design a print cover for you, we will also provide you with screen images so that you can promote your book on your website.
You will receive zip files for your printer, which are 300 dpi/vector.
We will usually explain this when we send you the files.  You will receive a proof or draft to look through and make sure you are happy with the design and layout.  Once you are happy with your draft you will then receive final files for your printer to use.
In summary you will receive print files for your printer and web versions for display on the computer.
If you are having a logo created we will send through a PNG and an EPS file for the printer/designer.

How will I receive my design project once it is done?

We will provide you with the files that you need for your printer, or we can give these directly to your printer if you wish.  The type of files we provide will be specific to you and your printer’s needs; however, we usually supply PDF files, unless asked otherwise.

Why do you use PDF?

We use PDF because this compresses your file making it smaller to store and email while still keeping your design at its best quality for printing (text sharpness etc)

What is a Bleed?

This is the area of the design that extends past the cover size.  This is done so that when your cover is cut or trimmed to the correct size, it ensures the image or color goes all the way to the very edge of the page.
Your cover’s background must be extended at least .125” beyond the final trim line to accommodate for cutting/trimming tolerance.  We encourage additional bleed beyond the minimum of .125”.

What if I want to change the dimensions once the final cover has been created?

We can change the dimensions of the cover for you once the cover has been created.  However, this can change the way your cover may look as the layout and images may not look the same at a different size.  Also if the change is very large some images may no longer be suitable as they will not be large enough for the new size and this may require finding suitable replacement images.
Please note that changes like this after the design has been completed will incur an additional charge. So it is important to confirm the template we drafted for you is OK with your manufacturer, as this is what we will design your packaging cover from.

Have a photo or image you want to use?

We can of course incorporate your images into your designs for you.  However we do need these images to be 300 dpi to look good in print.  Please send through any images you want used in as high a resolution as possible, normally 300 dpi.  If you do not have an image at 300 dpi but have a very large image, please send it through and we will see if we can use it.
Remember a photo can look very large on screen but that is because it is 72 dots per inch.  When you print it out it becomes 300 dpi on paper so that same image that looked big on screen is actually very small.  When we convert a large picture to high resolution, it can make the image as small as 1 1/2” high, which is quite small for print purposes.
Please note if an image is blown up or is at low resolution, the image will appear blurry when printed.

Can you crop images or do some photo shopping?

Yes, we can crop your images or make changes to your images for you.  This kind of work is precise and can take a lot of time to do.  There is an additional charge of $47 per hour for adjustments or cropping of photos.

What color format is required for print graphics?

Generally all print work requires either CYMK (process) or Pantone color systems to be used.  All web graphics are created using the RGB color system so that they look good on screen, however for print this needs to be converted to another color system so that everything looks good on paper.

What is RGB?

RGB stands for Red, Green & Blue.  These are the colors used for viewing images on a screen or computer monitor.  Light made up of these 3 colors is mixed together in various ways which is what gives you the color you see on your screen.

What is Pantone?

This is a system of matching color used by many printers and many industries.  Pantone can produce colors that range outside the CMYK limitations and can include colors such as Metallics and Fluorescents.  When using Pantone colors, printers use the exact inks that have been requested, ensuring an almost perfect color match.

Can you add a barcode?

If you require a barcode on your print cover you will need to send us this as a high resolution (300 dpi) graphic, EPS, PDF, TIF or vector format.
We will not automatically generate this and add a barcode to your book’s cover.

What is an ISBN number?

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number, and is a unique number that can get assigned to commercially published books.  It is a useful number that identifies information such as Country of Origin or publisher, and makes it easy for Booksellers, Libraries and Universities to catalog books.
If you wish to have an ISBN number you will need to source this and send it through to us.  Sometimes your printer has particular requirements regarding this, so please check this with them and send us through their requirements.

You can find information about ISBN numbers here:
http://isbn.org/standards/home/index.asp

Why can’t I view my logo which has been created for print?

Please note your EPS graphic (print logo) can only be viewed if you have software installed such as Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop.  This file is used specifically for commercial printers.  You will also receive a PNG which you can view and download.

Is this anything I need to know if I want to print my cover out of my printer attached to my computer?

You will be able to print your graphics out of your printer.  However, some of our work is with commercial printers who use exact pantone colors.  Their machines are highly calibrated and print consistently, therefore, they do not encounter color problems which you may encounter if you print out of your printer attached to your computer.
You will also need to make sure the print settings are set to the right paper size.  Remember, depending on what you have ordered, it is possible that your cover may actually be bigger than the area that your printer can print.  However, your printer should be able to print a larger sized image out over many pages for you to then piece together like a jigsaw.
We will provide you with files that are designed to the exact size.  If you are having problems it is likely that the software you are using to print the covers s resizing them down to fit on the paper, or your printer is set at the incorrect setting.
In other words, once your print company prints them out they will be fine.
Tip:  If you want to print images at full size do not use the embedded windows image viewer and printing application as this will often reduce the image size.  Try using the printing application that came with your color printer as these often work very well.

Do you design for customers using print-on-demand companies such as Lulu, Lightningsource, CreateSpace or Vervante?

Yes, we design graphics for many customers who use print-on-demand companies, includingCreateSpace.com, and IngramSpark. We are familiar with their systems, and templates and can guide you through the process.
